Secure your Google account – Two Step Authentication

Using the same password for all your email, forums, blogs accounts online is a common thing to do, but your accounts might be compromised and that is why Google rolled out a new security measure to protect Gmail account holders from hackers. The new security measure is called “Two Step Authentication”. With all that said, if you would like to protect your Gmail account then you better enable the extra security. I will show you how to do it:

The new 2-step verification requires two different methods for authenticate your account, very similar to what you may have already experienced when trying to login into your bank account: your password, plus a code they would send to your mobile device. There is a new link on your Account Settings page that looks like the image below for the 2-step verification:

AccountSettings

It takes some time to set up the extra security, but I assure you it is very worthy. Set up 2-step verification—It probably takes up to 15 minutes to enroll and become functional. A very easy set-up wizard will guide you through the whole process, including setting up a backup phone in case you might need to use it to authenticate yourself and creating backup codes in case you lose access to your primary phone. Once the 2-step verification has been enabled, you will then see an extra page when trying to log in that prompts you for a code. After correctly entering your password, Google will call you or text you with the code or give you the choice to generate the code for yourself using a mobile application on your Android, BlackBerry or iPhone mobile device. It is up to you on how you might want to receive the code. After you get the code and enter this code correctly after submitting your password Google will have a very big certainty that the person signing in to the account is the rightful owner.

Remember, after you have successfully enabled the 2-step verification method, your account will be more secured than ever so there is no need to worry about a possible hack into your accounts. If you have any questions or issues just leave a comment below and I will try to help you out.

Recover your Gmail account

It happens to all of us, you might have forgotten your password or username and now need to recover it or in other instances, you might have been hacked or left your account open somewhere. But, there is no need to worry, this tutorial will help you get your account back by following a couple of simple steps.

There are a couple of ways to recover your account. Listed below are many options which could help you recover your Gmail account.

If you forgot your password, go to Gmail.com, then click on the “Can’t access your account?” or “Need Help” link and choose the “I don’t know my password” option. It will direct you to a page in which you will have 3 options for recovering your Gmail password.

Lost password

Lost password

This will direct you to a page in which you must enter your Gmail email address. Click on ‘Continue’ and enter the captcha code you see on screen. Then click ‘Next’.

Google will ask you to enter the email address that is associated with your Gmail Account or Google at google.com/accounts/ForgotPasswd – you will get an email to your secondary email account where you will find a link to change your Gmail password.

If that does not work then try one of the following options:

  1. Get a verification code sent to your mobile device.
  2. Answer your security question and perform an on-line password reset.
  3. Proceed to the Account Recovery Form. Look for a “Verify your identity” link if the other options don’t work.

If all of the options above do not work out for you then try to identify the problem in the list below:

Google tells you that the account does not exist, it might have been hacked by someone or you are simply entering the wrong username. In that case just got the link below:

If you forgot the account name?, (which is most likely the reason why Gmail tells you the account does not exist ), just use the “Can’t access your account?” or “Need Help” link and choose “I don’t know my username”.

If Gmail tells you to enter a mobile number to receive a SMS code, below is a link in which you would need to follow the process described there:

If you see: “Lockout (Sector 4)”,its an error that indicates that the account might be compromise. The account should automatically unlock itself in 24 hours or less.

If you see “Temporary Error (502)” or 500, do not worry, its just an internal error from Gmail’s part and should be fixed soon.

If you see any message about account “maintenance”, its just that Gmail is performing server maintenance and it takes 24 hours or less:

If you see any messages about being underage, Gmail believes you are too young to own a Gmail account (13 years or younger):

If you see any message about your account being “Disabled” or “Suspended”, It means that you might have committed some abuse, violation of the Terms of Service, or it might just be a compromised account. Just follow any instruction given by Gmail or the links they give you when you try signing in:

If you see an error that is not listed above, check out the link below which contains all possible errors that Gmail might show:

If you still do not know what to do, Gmail has an article that could help you out. You can also use it to walk through the process of account recovery.
